SUMMARY:Cultivating a Diverse Extension Master Gardener Program
DESCRIPTION:Biodiversity is essential to ecologic health. As gardeners we all know that mono-cultures are not sustainable. When asked to envision the next decade of our WSU Extension Master Gardener Program\, volunteers see a program that is more diverse and accessible to all. To become more diverse and accessible\, we must take action.Learn best practices for growing a healthy\, thriving\, and diverse community of Extension Master Gardener volunteers who foster and value our differences. Learn about how the Civil Rights Act requires certain action but can also inspire us to make sure we are doing our best to serve all audiences. Learn about how some of the values and belief systems we grew up with may not resonate with today’s gardeners.1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Finding Our Way Home: Native Plants in the Garden
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores how our goals and expectations as gardeners may be at odds with the biological truths of natural systems\, and how these differences can be recognized and addressed through the use of native plants to build resilient and sustainable gardens that appease our need to support natural ecosystems and also satisfy our souls.1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:School Gardens: Growing Food\, Growing Learning\, Growing Support
DESCRIPTION:K-12 School Gardens are growing around the globe. These outdoor classrooms and living laboratories are important for connecting student learning in all subjects and helping students become nature’s stewards. But more importantly\, gardens can make a difference in solving the growing food insecurity among our children\, families\, and communities. The inequitable distribution and lack of nutrient-rich foods results in health and learning issues among our youth. School gardens can make a huge difference because what students grow\, they will eat; however\, most school gardens have difficulty thriving\, and many fail. Community support is a key component in the quality and sustainability of school nature programs.Learn why nature and garden programs benefit student learning and food security\, how the WSU Master Gardeners support the Pioneer School District’s garden and Farm to School initiatives\, and help generate ideas on how community support can strengthen school and youth programs in our communities. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:What’s Buzzing? Supporting Pollinators in Your Backyard
DESCRIPTION:Pollination is essential for the development of many of our favorite fruits and vegetables. Insects provide most of our pollination services\, but many species are in decline. This presentation will cover the fundamentals of pollination\, review the plight of pollinators\, and ways you can promote and help pollinators in your backyard. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:RainScaping: Nature-inspired Solutions to Manage Home Runoff
DESCRIPTION:Rainwater running off residential properties washes pollutants – such as garden chemicals\, sediment and bacteria – from yards\, roofs and hard surfaces and into local waterways. To reduce runoff\, Snohomish County launched its pilot RainScaping campaign in 2022. A technical assistance program\, RainScaping helps “do-it-yourself” households use RainScaping’s nature-inspired solutions for their yard. Master Gardeners will learn about RainScaping’s online\, step-by-step guidance – applicable to western Washington clime\, soils\, and plants and adaptable to eastern Washington conditions. The presentation will show the range of RainScaping solutions available\, focus on specific solutions that relate directly to home horticulture\, and carefully cover important site considerations. Attendees will also discover how WSU Snohomish County Extension Master Gardeners are integrally involved in RainScaping’s online and in-person educational events and workshops. This presentation will highlight key aspects of the County’s RainScaping program\, its development\, upcoming evaluation\, and plans underway for video production. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Pesticide Use and Safety
DESCRIPTION:Pesticides are classified by mode of action. This presentation will take a look at modes of actions and how they impact the environment and the ecosystem differently. Modes of action often dictate when and how to use a pesticide. Modes of action help a person understand how pesticides work. Understanding how pesticides work in the plant or insect helps in appropriate pesticide selection\, application timing\, and resistance management\, as well as in diagnosis of pesticide injury. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will also go over the WSU policy relative to volunteers making pesticide recommendations. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Soil Carbon\, Organic Matter\, and Health: Myths\, Metrics\, and Management
DESCRIPTION:Soil carbon (C) is recognized as a critical element in the function and productivity of agricultural soils.  Soil organic matter (SOM)\, primarily made of C (55-60%)\, is used interchangeably in discussions of soil C; no matter the label\, SOM and soil C provide a wide array of benefits to the pedosphere which include: nutrients for plants and soil microorganisms\, aggregation of soil particles\, water infiltration\, and protection from soil erosion. Because of these benefits\, SOM and soil C receive much attention in soil health and climate change discussions\, with the latter primarily focused on carbon sequestration and storage. However\, recent shifts in scientific understanding have upended some of the previous thoughts and theories on soil C and SOM.  This talk will provide some clarity by defining what soil C (and SOM) is\, what information newer measures are providing us and\, how this information can inform management strategies and ultimately improve soil health. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:The Resilient Yard: Design and Maintenance in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:The Resilient Yard is for homeowners and Master Gardeners who want to know what actions they can take to combat climate change in their yard. Presentation breaks the yard down into the lawn\, the beds\, and the vegetable garden. For each section you are taken through actions you can take to either reduce your CO2 generation in maintaining your yard; or how you can design your yard to better capture CO2 and store it in your plants and soil. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Horticulture for Health & Well-being: Year-round\, Nature-based Programming for Special Populations
DESCRIPTION:We know there are physical\, cognitive\, emotional\, social\, and spiritual benefits of engagement with gardens and nature. Participants will learn strategies to support well-being in these areas of human growth and development with ideas for each season throughout the year. The evidence base for therapeutic garden characteristics and best practices related to design\, programming\, and presentation of beneficial green spaces will help participants grow even better return on the investment for the green spaces they support and grow in local communities. We will explore examples of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in all aspects of the process for creating and supporting healthier communities. Gardens grow everyone! See Legacy Health Therapeutic Garden Program growing healthier communities across the Portland\, Oregon metro region at www.legacyhealth.org/gardens. 1.25 CE credits
