DESCRIPTION:You may have seen colorful\, bumpy or fuzzy structures on leaves or stems and wondered what they were. Maybe you even recognized them as plant galls. But why are they there? How is it that insects and other organisms are able to control the growth of plants for their own benefit\, creating often outlandish and colorful structures known as plant galls? Do galls hurt the plants? Should we try to control them? If so\, how? The session will explore what plant galls are and showcase images of galls that you may see out on walks and hikes and even in your own garden and backyard. We’ll also talk about life inside the gall\, the role of galls in controlling invasive species\, and how galls are both beneficial and detrimental to humans.1 CE credit

SUMMARY:Nutrient Decline in Vegetables 
DESCRIPTION:Over the past several decades a decline has been noted in the nutrient density of vegetables and other plant-derived foods\, whether nutrient density is measured in nutrients per gram or nutrients per calorie. Part of the decline appears to derive from plant breeding programs aimed at increasing yield and faster growth. However\, recent studies have demonstrated that increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide have a negative effect on the uptake by plants of mineral nutrients from the soil.Evidence of decades of nutrient decline will be presented. Evidence of the effects of plant breeding programs will be illustrated through comparisons of nutrient content in older\, heirloom varieties to modern varieties. Discussion of the effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide level on mineral uptake will focus on experimental results from FACE (free air carbon dioxide enhancement) facilities.1 CE credit

SUMMARY:RainScaping: Nature-inspired Solutions to Manage Home Runoff
DESCRIPTION:Rainwater running off residential properties washes pollutants – such as garden chemicals\, sediment and bacteria – from yards\, roofs and hard surfaces and into local waterways. To reduce runoff\, Snohomish County launched its pilot RainScaping campaign in 2022. A technical assistance program\, RainScaping helps “do-it-yourself” households use RainScaping’s nature-inspired solutions for their yard. Master Gardeners will learn about RainScaping’s online\, step-by-step guidance – applicable to western Washington clime\, soils\, and plants and adaptable to eastern Washington conditions. The presentation will show the range of RainScaping solutions available\, focus on specific solutions that relate directly to home horticulture\, and carefully cover important site considerations. Attendees will also discover how WSU Snohomish County Extension Master Gardeners are integrally involved in RainScaping’s online and in-person educational events and workshops.This presentation will highlight key aspects of the County’s RainScaping program\, its development\, upcoming evaluation\, and plans underway for video production. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Soil Carbon\, Organic Matter\, and Health: Myths\, Metrics\, and Management
DESCRIPTION:Soil carbon (C) is recognized as a critical element in the function and productivity of agricultural soils.  Soil organic matter (SOM)\, primarily made of C (55-60%)\, is used interchangeably in discussions of soil C; no matter the label\, SOM and soil C provide a wide array of benefits to the pedosphere which include: nutrients for plants and soil microorganisms\, aggregation of soil particles\, water infiltration\, and protection from soil erosion. Because of these benefits\, SOM and soil C receive much attention in soil health and climate change discussions\, with the latter primarily focused on carbon sequestration and storage. However\, recent shifts in scientific understanding have upended some of the previous thoughts and theories on soil C and SOM.  This talk will provide some clarity by defining what soil C (and SOM) is\, what information newer measures are providing us and\, how this information can inform management strategies and ultimately improve soil health. 1.25 CE credits

DESCRIPTION:Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is managing plant damaging pests using cultural control methods\, like manual pruning or water management but also includes the use of chemical pesticides. The use of chemical pesticides comes with specific concerns and considerations for appropriate and effective use. Understanding how pesticides contact and interact with their target pest are critical for pest management as well as preventing the off-target impact of pesticides to the surrounding environment. Competent and confident use of chemicals in IPM requires the ability to read\, understand and follow a pesticide label. Reading the label enables Master Gardeners and those who rely on them for IPM options to protect themselves and the environment as well as determine what products work best for their specific conditions and how to integrate their use into the wider IPM “toolbox.” This presentation will cover IPM and how chemical pesticides are best utilized for effective pest management.
