SUMMARY:Pesticide Use and Safety
DESCRIPTION:Pesticides are classified by mode of action. This presentation will take a look at modes of actions and how they impact the environment and the ecosystem differently. Modes of action often dictate when and how to use a pesticide. Modes of action help a person understand how pesticides work. Understanding how pesticides work in the plant or insect helps in appropriate pesticide selection\, application timing\, and resistance management\, as well as in diagnosis of pesticide injury. \n\n\n\nThe presentation will also go over the WSU policy relative to volunteers making pesticide recommendations. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Soil Carbon\, Organic Matter\, and Health: Myths\, Metrics\, and Management
DESCRIPTION:Soil carbon (C) is recognized as a critical element in the function and productivity of agricultural soils.  Soil organic matter (SOM)\, primarily made of C (55-60%)\, is used interchangeably in discussions of soil C; no matter the label\, SOM and soil C provide a wide array of benefits to the pedosphere which include: nutrients for plants and soil microorganisms\, aggregation of soil particles\, water infiltration\, and protection from soil erosion. Because of these benefits\, SOM and soil C receive much attention in soil health and climate change discussions\, with the latter primarily focused on carbon sequestration and storage. However\, recent shifts in scientific understanding have upended some of the previous thoughts and theories on soil C and SOM.  This talk will provide some clarity by defining what soil C (and SOM) is\, what information newer measures are providing us and\, how this information can inform management strategies and ultimately improve soil health. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:The Resilient Yard: Design and Maintenance in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:The Resilient Yard is for homeowners and Master Gardeners who want to know what actions they can take to combat climate change in their yard. Presentation breaks the yard down into the lawn\, the beds\, and the vegetable garden. For each section you are taken through actions you can take to either reduce your CO2 generation in maintaining your yard; or how you can design your yard to better capture CO2 and store it in your plants and soil. 1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Horticulture for Health & Well-being: Year-round\, Nature-based Programming for Special Populations
DESCRIPTION:We know there are physical\, cognitive\, emotional\, social\, and spiritual benefits of engagement with gardens and nature. Participants will learn strategies to support well-being in these areas of human growth and development with ideas for each season throughout the year. The evidence base for therapeutic garden characteristics and best practices related to design\, programming\, and presentation of beneficial green spaces will help participants grow even better return on the investment for the green spaces they support and grow in local communities. We will explore examples of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in all aspects of the process for creating and supporting healthier communities. Gardens grow everyone! SUMMARY:Learning How to Care for Solitary Mason and Leafcutter Bees
DESCRIPTION:Bees are becoming an increasingly popular addition to gardens – but not just honeybees. If you’re thinking of hosting bees in your yard\, releasing solitary MASON bees should be top on your list. Solitary bees make up 90% of all bees on the planet and are one of mother nature’s bet pollinators! On average\, each mason bee can visit over 2\,000 blooms daily and pollinate 95% of the flowers they land on in comparison to the meticulous pollen gathering of honeybees who only have a 5% pollination rate. This makes them the unsung heroes of the pollinating world! Not only can they help us grow more food\, but their belly flopping pollen collecting methods make surrounding habitat healthier. Solitary bee activity helps filter out pollutants from air and water streams – increasing overall ecosystem health everywhere these little bees buzz around.1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Integrated Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is managing plant damaging pests using cultural control methods\, like manual pruning or water management but also includes the use of chemical pesticides. The use of chemical pesticides comes with specific concerns and considerations for appropriate and effective use. Understanding how pesticides contact and interact with their target pest are critical for pest management as well as preventing the off-target impact of pesticides to the surrounding environment. Competent and confident use of chemicals in IPM requires the ability to read\, understand and follow a pesticide label. Reading the label enables Master Gardeners and those who rely on them for IPM options to protect themselves and the environment as well as determine what products work best for their specific conditions and how to integrate their use into the wider IPM “toolbox.” This presentation will cover IPM and how chemical pesticides are best utilized for effective pest management. This presentation will cover how to develop an IPM plan for a client.1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:AIM for Active Learning
DESCRIPTION:Teaching for active learning intentionally involves learners in “authentic\, interactive\, meaningful” (AIM) processes to achieve learning goals. It places learners at the center of engaged learning as they think and examine more deeply\, compare and contrast\, grapple and dialogue\, explain and elaborate\, question and problem solve\, create and innovate\, organize and articulate ideas\, information\, perspectives\, understandings\, and reasoning for real-world applications. In short\, active learning goes beyond surface\, shallow\, or rote approaches to instruction and instead nurtures and energizes thinking that becomes all the more impactful in collaborative settings. In this session\, participants will (a) consider key elements of active learning\, (b) explore three broad purposes for involvement\, (c) examine a variety of strategies to facilitate active learning\, (d) experience selected strategies\, and (e) reflect on possible applications in one’s own role as a Master Gardener.1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Backyard Citizen Science Opportunities in the Pacific Northwest
DESCRIPTION:Citizen science projects provide opportunities to learn and conduct research simultaneously. Many projects exist where anyone can participate from their backyard or neighborhood in the Pacific Northwest. Whether you want to get your hands dirty collecting soil samples\, show off your photography skills monitoring wildlife\, or share your taxonomic expertise of plants or insects\, there is likely a project that would benefit from your skills and participation. Indeed\, the contributions of Extension Master Gardeners to these projects over the past 50 years provides a lot to celebrate\, but it’s also exciting to look forward and consider the next 50 years of advancing and sharing knowledge together. The purpose of this presentation is to reflect on the incredible contributions of citizen scientists in the recent past and share many projects with opportunities to contribute in the future.1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Native Plants for Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Washington has over 5\,000 taxa of native plants\, ranging from very common and widespread species to rare plants and narrow endemics. This plant diversity supports most of our wildlife\, beginning with the insects that feed on them\, and makes our state the beautiful and interesting place where we’ve chosen to live. While most of the rare and sensitive species aren’t appropriate for the home garden\, a great number of natives are good choices for the garden\, but some may be hard to get. In this program you’ll be introduced to (or reacquainted with) a selection of garden-worthy natives for both sides of the Cascades that are available from specialty nurseries and other sources. The plants will include trees\, shrubs\, perennials\, and groundcovers.1.25 CE credits

SUMMARY:Garden Allies: An Introduction to Life in the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:A frequent topic of gardening questions is about the insects and other life found there – and how to maintain an ecological balance while creating beautiful landscapes. This presentation takes a food web approach\, emphasizing the interdependence of all life in the garden. We will explore how the lives of insects\, birds\, other animals\, and soil organisms are inextricably interwoven with plants.   \n\n\n\nFollowing a brief overview of conservation biological control\, we explore why this approach is ideally suited to home landscapes. The presentation includes effective approaches to helping gardeners reduce their reliance on pesticides\, and to help them develop new perspectives on life in the garden. Master Gardeners will be provided with resources to supplement the presentation. 1.25 CE credits
