Modes of action often dictate when and how to use a pesticide. Modes of action help a person understand how pesticides work. SUMMARY:Soil Carbon\, Organic Matter\, and Health: Myths\, Metrics\, and Management
DESCRIPTION:Soil carbon (C) is recognized as a critical element in the function and productivity of agricultural soils.  Soil organic matter (SOM)\, primarily made of C (55-60%)\, is used interchangeably in discussions of soil C; no matter the label\, SOM and soil C provide a wide array of benefits to the pedosphere which include: nutrients for plants and soil microorganisms\, aggregation of soil particles\, water infiltration\, and protection from soil erosion. Because of these benefits\, SOM and soil C receive much attention in soil health and climate change discussions\, with the latter primarily focused on carbon sequestration and storage. However\, recent shifts in scientific understanding have upended some of the previous thoughts and theories on soil C and SOM.  This talk will provide some clarity by defining what soil C (and SOM) is\, what information newer measures are providing us and\, how this information can inform management strategies and ultimately improve soil health. 1.25 CE credits

Solitary bees make up 90% of all bees on the planet and are one of mother nature’s bet pollinators! On average\, each mason bee can visit over 2\,000 blooms daily and pollinate 95% of the flowers they land on in comparison to the meticulous pollen gathering of honeybees who only have a 5% pollination rate.This makes them the unsung heroes of the pollinating world! Not only can they help us grow more food\, but their belly flopping pollen collecting methods make surrounding habitat healthier. DESCRIPTION:Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is managing plant damaging pests using cultural control methods\, like manual pruning or water management but also includes the use of chemical pesticides. The use of chemical pesticides comes with specific concerns and considerations for appropriate and effective use. Understanding how pesticides contact and interact with their target pest are critical for pest management as well as preventing the off-target impact of pesticides to the surrounding environment. Competent and confident use of chemicals in IPM requires the ability to read\, understand and follow a pesticide label. Reading the label enables Master Gardeners and those who rely on them for IPM options to protect themselves and the environment as well as determine what products work best for their specific conditions and how to integrate their use into the wider IPM “toolbox.” This presentation will cover IPM and how chemical pesticides are best utilized for effective pest management. SUMMARY:The Rhododendron Species Garden
DESCRIPTION:Beautifully situated on 22 acres\, the Rhododendron Species Garden houses one of the largest collections of species rhododendrons in the world. The garden is joined by many other species of plants with growing conditions similar to rhododendrons. Those include Japanese Maples\, Pacific Northwest native trees\, and many rare plants. Regarded as “One of the best and most beautiful places on the West Coast to see autumn foliage.”The garden is also host to the Pacific Bonsai Museum. It is one of only twomuseums in the country solely dedicated to bonsai\, and one of only a handful of bonsai museums worldwide. SUMMARY:WSU Research Station and Demonstration Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Active research at WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center encompasses a wide variety of topics pertinent to Master Gardeners\, including work currently being conducted on rain gardens\, stormwater management\, low impact development\, strawberry and raspberry breeding\, soils research and work on sustainable agriculture. Inside the lab\, important work continues on plant diagnosis and pathology. Participants in this tour can view some of these projects and hear directly from researchers doing these studies. DESCRIPTION:This 760-acre urban park has literally something for everyone. Areas of interestinclude a dahlia trial garden\, a fuchsia garden\, an herb garden\, an iris garden\, arose garden\, and a native plant garden. There is also a lovely Japanese garden\,many wooded trails\, and access to Owen Beach on the Puget Sound.The park also hosts the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium\, which is the onlycombined zoo and aquarium in the Pacific Northwest. It houses 9\,000 specimens\,representing 367 animal species. The zoo is beautifully sited\, with views of PugetSound and Mount Rainier. The zoo is lushly landscaped\, respecting each animal’snative habitat. DESCRIPTION:This 27-acre garden gem boasts a collection of 145 species of native and exotictrees\, of which 450 are labeled\, and many are over 100 years old. The stars of thegarden are the 18 trees honored with the moniker Washington State ChampionTrees. There are some of the largest trees of their species.Reigning over Wright Park is the W. W. Seymour Conservatory. This regal glassconservatory was constructed in 1908 and is listed on the city of Tacoma\,Washington State and national historical registers. Featuring a twelve-sidedcentral dome\, and 3\,000 pieces of glass\, it houses more than 200 orchids\, and 250exotic plant species.
